Morris Mini 850, originally named the Morris Mini-Minor, was one of the first and most iconic versions of the classic Mini, released in 1959. This innovative, space-saving car, designed by Sir Alec Issigonis for the British Motor Corporation (BMC), set the standard for modern small cars for decades to come.

Production and branding

  • Launch names: The car was simultaneously released under two different BMC brand names: the Morris Mini-Minor and the Austin Seven. Both versions were nearly identical, differing only in badging and grille design.
  • Rebranding: In 1962, BMC dropped the Austin Seven name in favor of Austin Mini. The Morris name was dropped in the UK in 1969 when the Mini became a brand in its own right, though the Morris 850 name was used in some export markets until 1973.
  • Australian production: Australia was a major market for the car, where the Morris 850 was the first Mini produced locally, starting in March 1961.

Engine and performance

  • Transverse engine: A key innovation of the Mini 850 was its 848cc A-series, four-cylinder engine, which was mounted transversely at the front of the car. This allowed for 80% of the floorpan space to be dedicated to passengers and luggage, an engineering marvel at the time.
  • Performance: The engine produced 34 brake horsepower (bhp) and 44 lb-ft of torque, with a top speed of around 71 mph.
  • Integrated gearbox: The engine drove the front wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox housed within the engine's oil sump casting.

Design and features

  • Mark I characteristics: The initial Mark I version (1959–1967) had external door hinges, sliding windows, and a "moustache" grille.
  • Rubber cone suspension: The car's independent suspension used rubber cones instead of traditional springs, which allowed the suspension to adapt to different loads. This was later replaced by a hydrolastic system in 1964 before reverting to rubber cones in 1971.
  • No frills: Later, more basic Mini 850s, particularly in the early 1970s, were known as "price-leader" models, lacking features like a fresh-air heater found on the more expensive Mini 1000.
