The 1982 Fiat Bertone X1/9 is a compact, mid-engined targa-top sports car designed by Marcello Gandini of Bertone. In 1982, production transitioned entirely from Fiat to Bertone, featuring a 1.5-liter, 85-hp engine, 5-speed gearbox, and updated interiors.

1982 Model Characteristics

Engine:

(1.5L) single-overhead-cam inline-four, generally with either carburetors or fuel injection (depending on market).

Performance:

Approx. (European models) or 67–75 hp (US models), with 0-60 mph in roughly 11.5–12 seconds and a top speed around 112 mph.

Drivetrain: Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive (MR) layout with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Design & Practicality: Wedge-shaped design with retractable headlights, removable Targa roof (storable in the front trunk), and a rear cargo area.

1982 Shift: This year marked the shift from being marketed solely as a Fiat to being branded as a "Bertone" X1/9, with better rust protection added in later production.

Handling: Known for precise rack-and-pinion steering and independent MacPherson strut suspension.

The X1/9 was a popular, affordable, lightweight sports car in the US.
